    The reason for this is you need a pair to pass power, and a pair to pass data. Both of those cables you'll need to make identical with two pairs. So really what you're doing is making 2x RJ45 > RJ11 cables and plugging one from the phone server to the patch, and the other from the walljack to the phone. Since your server is the element providing power then all links in the chain need to be capable of carrying power. do you see 4 wires? That'll be how it passes power. Take a close look at that cable and look through the clear plastic RJ11 head itself.

    So in your previous post when you plugged directly in to the phone server with a premade RJ11 M/M cable it worked. Sorry to be so clueless about all of this. I did try using a second pair, just to see if that made any difference, but still not working. So it seems to be Phone server (RJ11) > Patch/WallJack (RJ45) > Phone itself (RJ11). There's no switch in between the phone server and the walljacks that I can see, but there are Cat5/6 cables connected directly to the phone server so it looks to me like there is a direct connection between each walljack and the phone server.
